There are some considerable\u00a0<strong>myths and illusions<\/strong>\u00a0regarding meditation and mindfulness, and it can be helpful to remove these first to get a true understanding of its intention.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"meditate\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Meditation is NOT:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is not concentrating on an object.<\/li>\n<li>It is not relaxation (although you will feel more relaxed by doing regular meditation)<\/li>\n<li>It is not a religious practice.<\/li>\n<li>It is not hypnosis.<\/li>\n<li>It is not thinking.<\/li>\n<li>It is not clearing your mind.<\/li>\n<li>It is not stopping your thoughts.<\/li>\n<li>It is not a trance.<\/li>\n<li>You do\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0have to be a Buddhist, do yoga, be gluten, alcohol, sugar, caffeine, drug, or nicotine free to meditate.<\/li>\n<li>Meditation does\u00a0<strong>not have<\/strong>\u00a0to be done seated; it can be done laying down or walking.<\/li>\n<li>It does not have to be practised in a quiet room.<\/li>\n<li>You can meditate anywhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Meditation IS:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is being aware of the present moment.<\/li>\n<li>It is the formal practice of mindfulness.<\/li>\n<li>It is mostly practiced by bringing the focus to the breath. When the mind wanders, we guide the attention back to the breath.<\/li>\n<li>It is allowing thoughts feelings and emotions to arise and pass.<\/li>\n<li>It is placing a distance between you and your thoughts.<\/li>\n<li>It is changing your relationship to your thoughts.<\/li>\n<li>It is always done with a non-judgmental attitude toward oneself i.e., with kindness.<\/li>\n<li>It is strengthening the Pre \u2013 frontal cortex; an area of the brain associated with concentration.<\/li>\n<p><a name=\"mindful\"><\/a>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Mindfulness is NOT:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is not walking slowly everywhere.<\/li>\n<li>It is not \u2018oohing \u2013 and ahhing\u2019 at everything.<\/li>\n<li>It is not floating around with our heads in the clouds.<\/li>\n<li>It does not mean we never lose our temper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Mindfulness IS:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the informal practice of mindfulness.<\/li>\n<li>It is being present to everyday activities such as eating, driving, walking, brushing your teeth, listening\u2026and many more.<\/li>\n<li>It is being present to thoughts, feelings and emotions and learning to respond rather than react.<a name=\"meditate\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"section box_section margin_top margin_bottom \">\n<div class=\"box box_1 blue\">\n<div class=\"user_content content\">\n<h2>Why meditate?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section plain_content \">\n<div class=\"content user_content\">\n<ul>\n<li>We meditate to train the mind to be present to what is happening right now.<\/li>\n<li>Often our minds are busy planning, ruminating, or solving \u2013 and while all these are massively beneficial \u2013 often our minds do not know when to quit. Establishing a new point of view can help you change the way you feel about things that have historically made you feel anxious and generated negative and panicky thoughts and feelings.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Depression<\/h3>\n<p>You start to see negative or painful thoughts as less powerful. An understanding that they lack credibility means they quickly start to hold less weight. You might continue to have those thoughts, but you are no longer weighed down by them \u2013 you can be aware of them as they arrive, and more importantly, depart.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Relationships<\/h3>\n<p>Whether you want to develop new, more positive relationships, or improve and enhance current (or even rekindle old) relationships, practising mindfulness can help you form deeper, more meaningful connections with others.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Relaxation<\/h3>\n<p>Letting go of tension and pre-occupied thinking is an important part of mindfulness. Mindfulness practises and exercises can be extraordinarily relaxing as well as exhilarating.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Focus<\/h3>\n<p>Understanding \u201cbeing in the moment\u201d helps you become, and remain, fully engaged in everything you do. Not only that \u2013 it generates an increased ability to deal with problems and negative issues as you become aware of them.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Sleep<\/h3>\n<p>The stresses and strains of life take their toll on us. We\u2019re so switched on in \u201cactive mode\u201d, our minds constantly racing for information, solutions to problems (trivial and major) that we often forget the ability of just \u201cbeing\u201d. Recapturing the ability to \u201cjust be\u201d not only helps us chill out and relax, but prepare ourselves naturally for sleep.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Fatigue<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s rather stating the obvious \u2013 but with your physical and mental health and wellbeing benefiting immeasurably from mindfulness practises and exercises, reduced stress, greater relaxation, better sleep, and reduced anxiety \u2013 life gets a whole lot easier. Rather than trudging through life as if stuck on some dreary energy-sapping treadmill, mindfulness puts more than just a spring in your step.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Happiness\/Contentment<\/h3>\n<p>Mindfulness makes you far more likely to enjoy the happy moments and pleasures in life as they happen, rather than dismiss them because you\u2019re too preoccupied with negative thoughts and feelings.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3>Career<\/h3>\n<p>Good employers are waking up to the power of mindfulness in the workplace. In the same way as providing workplace gym facilities, staff restaurants, and great health insurance leads to a healthier, happier, more content and motivated workforce \u2013 encouraging employees to adopt mindfulness does the same.
