I\u2019ve undertaken to publish as many replies as I can in the hope that it will help even more people to freedom.<\/p>\n<h2>Can I quit smoking and yet go for a drink?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Why do I always go back to smoking when I drink alcohol? I quit smoking for 2 months then began to smoke occasionally whilst out drinking. I managed to keep it to that for a while (just smoking while drinking) but I\u2019ve caved in this morning and am back to smoking properly. I\u2019m afraid that I \u201close it\u201d when drinking alcohol. I\u2019m so upset and disappointed with myself. Any words of advice for me please? Theo, Perth, Australia<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hi Theo,<\/p>\n<p>Well done for getting in touch \u2014 I\u2019m sure that I can set your mind at rest in my reply.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, you shouldn\u2019t feel obliged to quit drinking alcohol in an attempt to succeed in stopping smoking. If you actually wish to quit drinking alcohol that\u2019s quite another thing and once you\u2019re happy non-smoker you can address whether to make that decision then. If you eventually do decide that you\u2019d like to quit drinking then please do look into our phenomenally successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allencarr.com\/en-us\/easyway-stop-drinking\/\">quit alcohol program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The most important point is \u2014 you do not have to quit drinking to successfully quit smoking \u2014 just as long as you understand how the smoking trap works.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are two main reasons that alcohol causes an issue when someone quits smoking (it\u2019s a big subject and is covered in much more detail at our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allencarr.com\/en-us\/easyway-stop-drinking\/live-group-seminars\/\">Live Group Seminars<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3>1. There are those who quit smoking using willpower<\/h3>\n<p>They aren\u2019t fortunate enough to have used Allen Carr\u2019s Easyway method and have decided to tough it out on their own.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like a white knuckle ride as they hang on for grim life resisting the urge to smoke.<\/p>\n<p>As soon as they have an alcoholic drink\u2026that tight grip begins to loosen and they fall back into smoking as if they never quit.<\/p>\n<p>This can also happen to those who used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allencarr.com\/en-us\/easyway-stop-smoking\/\">Allen Carr\u2019s Easyway to Quit Smoking<\/a> without success.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason the method doesn\u2019t always gel for some people first time (which is why we offer free of charge back up seminars at our centres and free of charge advice to those who fail to quit with the book\u2026it normally just takes a few words of advice and guidance from us to slot things into place).<\/p>\n<h3>2. There are those who quit smoking using Allen Carr\u2019s Easyway but fail to heed our warning about overconfidence<\/h3>\n<p>They find it easy to quit smoking and at some point down the line have a casual, throwaway thought about maybe trying a cigarette.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t even want a cigarette \u2014 they just flippantly think, \u201cwhy not?\u201d and find out what we say is true. It takes just one puff of a cigarette, cigar, pipe, or joint with tobacco in it to lead them back into the trap.<\/p>\n<p>In either case, people either hurtle back into the smoking trap \u2014returning to smoking at their previous level straight away or they put the brakes on, rebuke themselves, and decide not to smoke again putting it down to a silly mistake on their part. They\u2019re determined that they won\u2019t let it happen again.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, psychologically, a week or two later \u2014 in the same kind of situation \u2014 in a pub, a bar, or a club, their conscious and subconscious mind begins to unravel all their willpower-driven determination and\/or the counter-brainwashing achieved by Allen Carr\u2019s Easyway.<\/p>\n<p>A little voice appears in their mind:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou got away with it last week and haven\u2019t smoked since\u2026Allen Carr was wrong\u2026you CAN have the occasional cigarette!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One thing leads to another and the gaps between cigarettes get closer and closer together until the smoker eventually ends up where you are Theo. A fully fledged smoker again.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is, you became a smoker again the moment you lit that first casual, meaningless, flippant cigarette\u2026the rest of your journey was the inevitable consequence of that act.
