An increasing number of US teenagers are getting their caffeine fix through pouches, hitting the bloodstream faster than a traditional cup of coffee. This trend could soon become popular in the UK as well.

The marketing and the appeal to young people is clear. Just like with snus, the pouch is placed in the mouth between the top gum and lip so it is discreet and hidden. The aim is to give a quick energy boost which clearly appeals to students but experts fear it could be easy to consume too much, leading to unpleasant side effects.

Risks and Consequences

Dr. Rob van Dam from George Washington University expressed concern because a single pouch contains as much caffeine as two cups of coffee.

The health impacts of over-caffeination are severe, potentially leading to rapid heart rates, abnormal heart rhythms and seizures.

Moreover, as caffeine is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, overconsumption could lead to symptoms such as nausea, uneasiness, and irritability.

Pregnant women, children, and teenagers are particularly susceptible to these risks.

Advice from Experts

Bini Suresh, Head of Dietetics at the Cleveland Center, London, and a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, highlights how these pouches could serve to normalise stimulant use in younger individuals, leading to patterns of dependency.

At Allen Carr’s Easyway, we recognize the potential harm caffeine pouches can cause, especially among young users.

It’s concerning to see a trend that normalises dependency and makes it simple for such a high amount of caffeine to be consumed so quickly.

We encourage awareness of these products and their potential risks to protect our younger generation.

We are also there to help those caught in the caffeine trap with our Allen Carr’s Easyway to Quit Caffeine program.
