Are Low-Calorie Sweeteners Dulling Your Brain?

Recent research shows that low and no-calorie sweeteners in common drinks and foods could age your brain by up to 1.6 years.

According to recent research, the consumption of sweeteners, notably those found in common drinks and foods like yoghurts, could impair your cognitive abilities.

The study demonstrated a potential long-term threat to cognitive function from consuming low and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCs), particularly artificial LNCs and sugar alcohols.

Accelerated Cognitive Decline Linked to Sweetener Consumption

People who consumed the highest amount of sweeteners such as aspartame and saccharin experienced a 62% faster decline in their cognitive powers. The decline is likened to ageing by 1.6 years – a startling statement that only heightens existing warnings about the hazards attributed to sweeteners.

Alternatives to Low and No-Calorie Sweeteners

Based on the association with cognitive decline observed, the researchers recommend that consumers opt for healthier alternatives, including tagatose (a natural sweetener) or traditional products such as honey or maple syrup.

The findings come after studying the impact of seven sweeteners on 12,772 civil servants in Brazil for an average of eight years.

Keep Your Brain Sharp: Limit Sweetener Consumption

Those who consumed the most sweeteners experienced faster declines in thinking, memory skills, and global cognition.

However, note that this worrying trend was mainly observed in participants under the age of 60. These studies highlight the urgent need to encourage middle-aged adults to limit their intake of sweeteners.
