Is my child using ketamine? The signs & how to tell
How do you talk to your child about ketamine? Discover ways to start the conversation calmly, listen without judgment and help them feel comfortable coming to you for support.
How you speak matters as much as what you say. Your aim is to keep them talking, not to win an argument.
Before you start
- Choose a calm moment, never when they are high, hungover or when you are angry.
- Side-by-side often works better than face-to-face: in the car, on a walk, cooking together.
- Decide in advance that you will listen more than you speak.
During the conversation
- Open gently
- “I’ve been reading about ketamine and how common it is. Have you come across it?”
- Ask, don’t accuse
“What do people your age say about it?” “Why do you think people use it?”
- Listen without reacting
If they admit something, thank them for being honest. Shock or anger teaches them to quit telling you things.
- Separate the person from the drug
“I’m not angry with you. I’m worried about what ketamine is doing to you.”
- Question the illusion together
“What does it actually give you? What happens the next day?” Let them reach the answers themselves.
- Share facts, not fear
Bladder damage and memory loss are powerful because they are real and specific.
- Make it a conversation, not a lecture
Expect to come back to it many times.
Things to avoid
- Labels such as “addict”, “junkie” or “druggie”
- Threats you won’t carry out
- Comparing them with siblings or friends
- Telling them how to feel, or suggesting they just need more willpower
If they shut down. Leave the door open: “Okay. I love you, and whenever you want to talk, I’m here, no matter what.” Then come back to it another day.
