Choose the right programme for youHow you speak matters as much as what you say. Your aim is to keep them talking, not to win an argument.
Before you start
- Choose a calm moment, never when they are high, hungover or when you are angry.
- Side-by-side often works better than face-to-face: in the car, on a walk, cooking together.
- Decide in advance that you will listen more than you speak.
During the conversation
- Open gently
- “I’ve been reading about ketamine and how common it is. Have you come across it?”
- Ask, don’t accuse
“What do people your age say about it?” “Why do you think people use it?”
- Listen without reacting
If they admit something, thank them for being honest. Shock or anger teaches them to stop telling you things.
- Separate the person from the drug
“I’m not angry with you. I’m worried about what ketamine is doing to you.”
- Question the illusion together
“What does it actually give you? What happens the next day?” Let them reach the answers themselves.
- Share facts, not fear
Bladder damage and memory loss are powerful because they are real and specific.
- Make it a conversation, not a lecture
Expect to come back to it many times.
Things to avoid
- Labels such as “addict”, “junkie” or “druggie”
- Threats you won’t carry out
- Comparing them with siblings or friends
- Telling them how to feel, or suggesting they just need more willpower
If they shut down. Leave the door open: “Okay. I love you, and whenever you want to talk, I’m here, no matter what.” Then come back to it another day.
