Weight loss drugs cause pancreas issues
Investigation on Weight Loss and Diabetes Medications
UK Health officials have announced they will launch a study into the side effects associated with weight loss and diabetes injections.
This investigation follows a surge in reports through the MHRA’s Yellow Card scheme, which is utilised to monitor adverse reactions to medications and medical devices throughout the UK.
Impact of Medications on Pancreatic Health
Acute pancreatitis, characterised by sudden inflammation of the pancreas, has been a key concern.
This condition often necessitates hospitalisation and symptoms can include severe abdominal pain, fever, and nausea.
Patient leaflets for GLP-1 medications list pancreatitis as an uncommon reaction, impacting approximately one in 100 patients. However, nearly 400 reports about acute pancreatitis from users of weight loss drugs such as Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic and liraglutide have been lodged, with almost half involving Mounjaro.
Spike in Reports Throughout 2025
More than a quarter of these reports were filed in 2025 alone. Consequently, an MHRA spokesperson expressed concern over the increased number of Yellow Card reports mentioning GLP-1 medicines and acute pancreatitis.
In an effort to comprehend the extent of influence genetic factors might have on this condition, MHRA encourages anyone with acute pancreatitis suspected to be linked to these medicines to report it to the Yellow Card scheme. Healthcare professionals are also urged to report on behalf of their patients.
Participating in The Yellow Card Biobank Study
Patients who report will be invited to participate in the Yellow Card Biobank study. The study, managed by Genomics England, will ask patients to provide further information and a saliva sample for scientific analysis.
While there is currently no known genetic link that elevates the risk of acute pancreatitis with GLP-1 medications, the MHRA is pursuing further investigations. This action has been driven by the increasing usage of these medicines and the mounting reports of acute pancreatitis.
Comment by Allen Carr’s Easyway
At Allen Carr’s Easyway, we believe in promoting healthy and drug free ways to deal with weight issues and weight management without the need for dependency on medications with serious side effects.
With these drug-based solutions, there are increasing side effects such as hair loss, an increased risk of unexpected pregnancy and now acute pancreatitis.
There is also the issue that when the person quits taking the drug, it would appear that they quickly put the weight back on again so it is a temporary, not long-term solution.
The best solution is a drug-free approach, that requires no diets but changes how you think about food and particularly ultra-processed food / junk food. Read more about Allen Carr’s Easyway to Lose Weight
