An alarming new research report suggests that one-third of teenagers in the UK who vape will eventually start smoking tobacco. This mirrors the likelihood of teens smoking in the 1970s.

An intergenerational long-term study discovered that the chance of starting to smoke for 17-year-olds in 2018 was about 1.5% for non-vapers, but an alarming 33% amongst those who did vape.

This critically suggests that e-cigarettes are increasingly serving as a ‘gateway’ to nicotine addiction for teenagers. Such a development threatens to undermine the decline witnessed in teen smoking rates over the past half-century.

Delving into the Data

The study considered teenage smoking in 2018 as it was the most recent year with comparable data available. Worryingly, the chance of starting smoking may have grown since then, considering that both vaping rates and smoking rates amongst teenagers have escalated in the past seven years.

According to data compiled by Action on Smoking and Health this year, 20% of 11- to 17-year-olds in Great Britain have tried vaping, equating to a daunting 1.1 million children. This figure had tripled in the preceding three years from 2023.

The shocking research was undertaken at the University of Michigan and published in the Tobacco Control journal, drawing on intergenerational data from three nationally representative birth cohorts of UK teens born in 1958, 1970, and 2001.

The overall likelihood of cigarette smoking for an average teen (aged 16 or 17) was calculated as 30% for those born in 1958, 22% for those born in 1970, and 9.5% for those born in 2001 but 33% amongst those who did vape.

Concerning Consequences

Steve Turner, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, called the research results “incredibly concerning”. He expressed grave concerns about teens developing a lifelong addiction to the nicotine contained in vapes.

Turner further stressed the fact that smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the UK.

Comment by Allen Carr’s Easyway

These findings do not come as a surprise to Allen Carr’s Easyway. We have said that this would be the case ever since e-cigarettes became available to the general population.

Big Tobacco need future addicts so this was always
their objective which is why we could not understand the positions taken by ASH and the Department of Health on vaping.

What is needed now is to help those people addicted to nicotine and prevent you people getting addicted.

Allen Carr’s Easyway is a drug free and clinically proven approach to stop smoking.
