Teenage girls in Europe have the highest rate of tobacco use globally for their age group, while one-in-seven adolescents across the continent use vapes and e-cigarettes, according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report.

Europe continues to be the world’s largest consumer of tobacco, with estimates suggesting no decline till 2030.

The report highlights specifically troubling trends of tobacco use among women and young individuals.

Four out of ten adult female smokers worldwide reside in Europe, totalling around 62 million women.

Additionally, 4 million adolescents aged 13-15 within the continent use tobacco products.

Regarding e-cigarettes, Europe has the highest prevalence of teenage regular users (14.3%), and the second-highest adult prevalence, trailing Asia.

An estimated 1.1 million deaths across Europe can be attributed to tobacco use annually.

The report also notes targeted marketing strategies by the tobacco industry towards young people.

Progressive countries like Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands are fighting back by regulating new products, banning flavours and restricting marketing.

The UK is aiming for a 30% relative reduction in tobacco use prevalence among people aged 15 and over, boasting the third-lowest rate of tobacco use across Europe.

However, only a third of European countries have smoke-free laws covering public spaces, and only a quarter have bans on tobacco marketing.
